Is Your Business Content Starting to Sound Like AI?
September 3, 2026
AI tools have made it easier than ever to create content quickly. But as more businesses turn to AI for blogs, social media captions, emails, and other marketing, a new problem is emerging: content is starting to sound and look the same.
If your marketing has started to feel flat or generic, or you're noticing similarities between your content and that of other businesses, it may be time to look at how much of your brand's voice is making it into the final product.
Signs Your Content Might Sound Too AI-Generated
Here are a few common signs that your content may need a little more of your own voice:
- Does it sound polished but say nothing specific? AI tends to write in broad strokes, covering the big picture without getting into the details. Could your content apply to almost any business in your industry? If so, it may be missing the details that make your business unique.
- Does it rely on the same words and phrases? AI has some favorite phrases, including "leverage," "delve," "top-notch," "game changer," and "it's worth noting." If you're seeing the same language repeatedly, it may be a sign that your content needs a stronger edit.
- Does it sound like you? Read your content out loud. Does it sound like something you would actually say to a customer? If the answer is no, it's probably time to rewrite it in your own voice.
- Does it include real examples from your business? Your business has experiences, projects, services, customers, and stories that make it unique. If none of those details make it into your content, it can easily start to feel generic.
How to Fix It
You don't have to stop using AI. Instead, use it as a starting point and take the time to make the content your own.
- Edit with your audience in mind. Ask yourself whether your customers would actually find the content useful or interesting. If not, keep editing or reconsider the topic altogether.
- Add something specific to your business. Have a good example from a recent project? A customer story? A service that sets you apart? A special offer? Adding real details instantly makes content feel more relevant and credible.
- Read it out loud. This is one of the easiest ways to catch writing that doesn't sound like you. If you wouldn't say it in a conversation with a customer, rewrite it.
- Cut the filler. AI often adds extra sentences and paragraphs that make content longer without making it better. If you can remove a sentence without losing anything important, cut it.
The Best Content Still Sounds Like Your Business
Your customers don't need another piece of generic content. They need to hear what makes your business different.
